Manhattan, New York—recognized as the national hub of commerce, culture, and finance—is the borough most closely associated with New York City. Manhattan comprises Manhattan Island, several smaller island communities, and a portion of the U.S. mainland. This compact borough spans approximately 33 square miles, making it one of the smallest counties in the country; however, with a population of over 1.5 million according to the 2000 Census, Manhattan is the most densely populated region in the nation.

Most of Manhattan lies between the East River and the Hudson River, featuring an extensive system of bridges and tunnels that connect the borough to New Jersey and the rest of New York City. Access to Staten Island, the city’s southernmost borough, is provided via ferry service. Manhattan is generally divided into Downtown, Midtown, and Uptown areas, with Fifth Avenue marking the dividing line between the East and West Sides. Additionally, six distinct districts make up the Manhattan region.

Chinatown is home to the country’s most concentrated Asian community, with boundaries extending through the Lower East Side and into Little Italy. Greenwich Village offers a cosmopolitan atmosphere reflecting the bohemian styles of Paris, while Harlem preserves a rich African American history and the roots of jazz music. The Upper East Side boasts luxurious residences and iconic landmarks such as Central Park, the Guggenheim Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Inwood and the Financial District round out the rest of Manhattan. The Financial District is home to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, the New York Stock Exchange, South Street Seaport, Wall Street, and the World Financial Center, located near Battery Park. This major financial hub sits across from West Street, on the site where the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers stood until September 11, 2001. Manhattan is also home to the imposing Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, where so many U.S. citizens first laid eyes on their new homeland.

Midtown is a key component of New York City’s economy and ranks among the most important financial districts in the United States. Its boundaries encompass residential buildings, hotels, and businesses, while its impressive skyline features the Chrysler Building, the Empire State Building, Rockefeller Center, and the United Nations headquarters. Midtown draws tourists with iconic landmarks such as Broadway, Times Square, and the exclusive shopping areas of Fifth Avenue, Madison Avenue, and Park Avenue.

Manhattan offers a wide range of public and private educational institutions for students of all ages. The public school system, managed by the New York City Department of Education, is the largest in the country. Higher education institutions include Columbia University, Fordham University, the New York Institute of Technology, NYU, and several campuses of the City University of New York (CUNY) system. According to 2003 statistics, more than 52% of Manhattan residents over the age of 25 hold a college degree.

Manhattan—New York City’s economic engine—offers a balanced lifestyle for people of all ages and backgrounds. Visitors to Manhattan have so many options that they could spend weeks in the borough without fully exploring everything it has to offer. Recognized as the safest major city in the United States, Manhattan provides an ideal environment for living, working, and raising a family.
